What is a Potcake?

'Potcake' is the name given to the dogs of The Bahamas and Turks and Caicos Islands. It came about because the locals fed the caked remains of the cooking pot to the dogs. NEW!! See the Article about Potcake Place on Todayshow.com and MSNBC!!! Click Here! (http://today.msnbc.msn.com/id/38434562/ns/today-today_pets_and_animals)Potcakes are rescued from around the islands of the Turks and Caicos. The spay/neuter programs are not keeping up. The feral dog population of the islands is growing, and more and more litters of puppies are being found as well as individual pups at a loss without their littermates. They may be found by tourists whilst they are out exploring, or locals in their back yard, whilst they are working on construction sites, or driving around the island. As generations have passed, Potcakes have evolved into a breed which is extremely smart, loyal and loving. In the 'Success Stories', you will see them so at home from the beach to the snow, and from playing gently with young children to snuggling with other dogs and cats. Potcakes grow up to between 35 lb and 75 lb, with 45-50 lb being the average.Adopt a Potcake. You will not be disappointed. You can save a life and make a difference in the future of one dog, of your own family, and of the Turks and Caicos Islands. Potcakes need your help.SPECIAL NOTE: This is Cutie Pie, she is still looking for her new forever home, please go see more pictures of her in the Adopt A Potcake section. She sure is having fun going to all the local hot spots, this picture is from the Turks and Caicos Vibes Kiteboarding Tournament! ---- UPDATE: Cutie Pie has been adopted! Pictures to come soon!

Volunteers ALWAYS Needed

Are you travelling from Provo to an airport in the States or Canada- perhaps after a vacation here, or to get off-island for a time. Please volunteer to carry a pup with you to their new home. Just let us know the date and destination- the more options we have for the new owners, the more likely they will be able to adopt.Provo to ALL AIRPORTS IN THE US and CANADA- please contact us with any date and destination.Always need all major US and Canada airports- please get in touch with date and destination. Please help change the life of a pup and family, and free up space to save another pup from starvation. Please help if you can. We need YOU to raise a paw and volunteer. We can meet beforehand, or just at Provo airport at the time of travel. We arrange all paperwork, check-in and pay all fees associated with the pups travel. The volunteer simply has to accompany the pup on to the plane, and place the sherpa bag under the seat in front, and then show the health certificate to customs at the destination airport and hand the pup over to the new owner who will meet them there. We keep in constant contact with the new owner to ensure that the liason goes smoothly.Taking an extra carry-on bag on a journey you will already be taking, can mean the world to a young pup and a family awaiting their new addition. It will also allow us to save more pups lives as we free up space in foster homes.WE NEED VOLUNTEERS URGENTLYPLEASE HELPTripAdvisor Nov 2006: Just wanted to let everyone know how easy it is to courier a potcake to the US. It actually made leaving a little easier for my 3 kids! They were quite excited to be rescuing a dog from their new favorite island. We were met at the airport in Provo by the Potcake Place founders, given all of the pup's paperwork, Sherpa bag, etc. Abby, the pup, was given a sedative, and we walked through security together no problem. She was a big hit in the gate waiting area and the kids loved her to pieces. She got sleepy after about 20 minutes and settled into her carrier. Getting through customs and immigration in Charlotte where we had a layover took one extra step. Then we had to take her out of the carrier to have her walk through security. Put her back in the bag and not another peep until we arrived in Boston where her new owners were anxiously awaiting her arrival. It was about an 8 hour trip from airport to airport and she did just fine. I strongly encourage everyone to consider giving a Potcake a second chance even if you can't adopt, you can still help by bringing one home to another loving family! Mar 2007: It was such a pleasure to be a part of the wonderful work you are doing for these beautiful pups. We were thrilled to carry Olive to her new Mom (though hard to give her up.) She was the most beautifully tempered dog I've ever met and she stole the hearts of not just us but so many people in the airports-the security guards, airline hostesses, custom officials, fellow passengers and even the pilot. It was a real joy for us to be able to help, in our small way, in securing a loving home for Olive/Dakota. Transporting a pup to Miami was no problem at all and we will do it again when we return to the Turks. Sept 2007: Mahler was an absolute joy to transport. He was a star everywhere he went, and we answered lots of inquiries as to 'what is a Potcake?' Little Mahler touched a few hearts, and ours are definitely included. You would have never known that he was a first-time flier, as he never made a sound or even soiled his bag liner! He patiently waitied for our destinations to do his thing on a pad we laid out for him, and we never had to give him a sedative. Many people made comments that he was much better behaved than the children on the plane, haha. Thank you again to the Potcake Place for what you do, and letting us assist in this little guy's adoption. You couldn't have made it any easier for us to do, and whenever we make it back to Turks and Caicos, we will make sure to do it again! To anyone else who may be considering volunteering as a courier: You won't regret it!
