"I adopted a potcake from South Caicos Island in August 2005. They really are incredible dogs: Annie is so well behaved, and smart! I just can't say enough good things about her-- people approach me on the street to ask what breed of dog she is, and friends ask where they can find a dog like her. I'll direct them to your website! Just wanted to say congratulations on the good work that your organization is doing."

Brothers Reunited

"Sean and Provo, two brothers (and absolutely identical twins!) were recently reunited in Boston. They recognized each other immediately, and played together in much the same way as they had as pups! It was an absolutely glorious reunion! When Provo went home, Sean curled up into a ball and cried and cried. He was reassured that he'd be seeing Provo again soon, as we plan to celebrate their first birthdays together in March! It was SO beautiful seeing the brothers together again!"

Puppy Classes

"Ty just attended his first puppy kindergarten class.  He is about 3 ½ months now.  He did GREAT!  He has a beautiful puppy sit and did great paying attention to me once the class got started.  After only about 15-20 minutes of “class” they got to get off their leads and have some good old fashioned puppy play time. I was so proud of him.  I got a little emotional watching him play with all his new friends and be a part of a pack again.  It was beautiful! He is a sweetheart and I feel so thankful for him."

Well Behaved Girls

"Adorable Blaze and Ashley made the trip to Chicago without a hitch! They slept most of the way and people on the plane didn't even know that they were there until I told them. Both girls are eating very well and love treats and their new chew toys. They enjoy play time in their new backyard and visits with friends. Everyone comments on how sweet and well behaved they are. We really appreciate your amazing work and will keep you posted on their progress!"

Our Hospice Potcake

"Violet enjoyed her first Christmas with us. She helped open some presents. I have taken her to the hospice I work at with me. She comes every day. Our residents just love her and a nurse takes her on rounds with her. Violet's calm ways has brought so much joy to our terminal residents. She senses their limits and adjusts herself accordingly. She loves the gardens and has marked a few special plants as hers. We have a huge staff and I am known to many people as Violet's mom. Everyone has heard of her. She is our hospice dog. My boss has been very supportive of Violet and enjoys having her around. I am very blessed. Having Violet in my life has added so much and I just could not imagine not having her. Thank you again for giving us Violet, she is truly a gift. She naturally attracts people to her. Take care!"

We have Snow!

"We have snow!  Ginger is like a kid in a candy store...running thru it, so playful. She is in and out...I need a revolving door!  It is hilarious to watch...her coat has really thickened up so I don't think the temperatures will be an issue.  So wonderful to watch them when they discover something new...."

Colder Climes

"Ace & Chloe are brother & sister who we adopted in April 2005. They are loving, loyal and wonderful as you would imagine. We have relocated to Vermont (April 2006) and I would like to report that they are adjusting to the colder climate like pros. Two plane rides and long road trips were handled with ease, by these two inseperable siblings. They go to doggie day care if we are working and have continued to acclimate to their New England surroundings making many friends along the way. If there is anything I could offer to help place potcakes in my surrounding area I would be happy to do so. THANK YOU for the work you do!"

Two Potcakes

"Kipper's first vet visit here in the States went great. He weighs 18.5 lbs. They all loved him and thought he was doing well. Heidi and Kipper have a few moments of challenge but for the most part are really coming along. I feel very lucky to have both!"

Patch on Provo

"'Blue' is doing very well. He spent the entire day/evening at my side. He seems happy. He is so loving and is always trying to cuddle. He is so sweet natured and I am so thankful that he has joined my family. Roxy doesn't LOOOOOVE him YET...but I can tell she really likes him. Thank you for saving him...I promise he will be happy from here on out!"

Bay goes Home

"Bay has been a hit by everyone who sees her, and I tell them all about the potcakes and your group.  She is eating fine and is alert, playful and very adorable.  She went to work with me today and everyone loved her.  She enjoyed everyone she met and slept most of the day as she is while I'm writing this.  We also went to the vet and of course they all love her, then to the pet store where she acquired more fans.  Bay was so happy to see Katie and wants to play but Katie keeps her distance for now.  Hope to send photos soon.  Thank you all so much for my Bay."

New York City

"Zena and Foxy are doing FANTASTIC! They had their first walk today in New York City and went to the dog run and met tons of other dogs. They did great. My Pitt-bull, CoCo is a grand dame so they follow her. She's the leader and puts them in their place when necessary. Charlie my mutt Chihuahua likes them OK. But the one who LOVES them is Cleopatra, one of our five cats. She licks them and smells them. Zena and Foxy are beside themselves. They fit right in. Even expect a bit of pampering now, thank you very much."

In the Snow

"We fell in love with the Potcakes on our first trip to Provo four years ago, but since we live in the mountains of NC (ski resort area) we thought it would be too cold for island dogs. A chance encounter with Heidi (see her own success story) and we found out that many Potcakes go to Canada. What a great chance encounter that turned out to be! Thanks to two very sweet ladies from Pittsburgh who volunteered to be couriers, we now have our puppies. They are learning quickly and are incredibly sweet...I think somehow they know they were saved from a very hard life and they seem so appreciative. They love to wrestle and play and even though Flash has the size advantage, Dellis seems to always come out on top! I’m so glad we adopted them together!"

North Carolina.

LA Bound Hound

"Thank you for everthing! Swiper, now "Caico", is at his new home doing well. We took him to the vet today and what a small world!  His new doctor is responsible for setting up the vet clinic in the Turks and Caicos islands.  He loves Caico too!  I don't think I've ever loved one creature so much in my life...wish we were still there but we have the best daily reminder!  Talk to you soon!"

What is a Potcake?

'Potcake' is the name given to the dogs of The Bahamas and Turks and Caicos Islands. It came about because the locals fed the caked remains of the cooking pot to the dogs.

Potcakes are rescued from around the islands of the Turks and Caicos. The spay/neuter programs are not keeping up. The feral dog population of the islands is growing, and more and more litters of puppies are being found as well as individual pups at a loss without their littermates. They may be found by tourists whilst they are out exploring, or locals in their back yard, whilst they are working on construction sites, or driving around the island.

As generations have passed, Potcakes have evolved into a breed which is extremely smart, loyal and loving. In the 'Success Stories', you will see them so at home from the beach to the snow, and from playing gently with young children to snuggling with other dogs and cats.

Potcakes grow up to between 35 lb and 75 lb, with 45-50 lb being the average.

Adopt a Potcake. You will not be disappointed.  You can save a life and make a difference in the future of one dog, of your own family, and of the Turks and Caicos Islands. Potcakes need your help.

These pups need homes

There are so many Potcake pups needing homes. Please read their 'rescue stories' to find out the history of the dog population.

The following photos are just a few of the pups who have been saved and are in need of new homes right now:

Local couple finds puppy love
By: Brendan Purves , Staff Writer

Misty Pileggi and her husband Frank, of Lower Salford, were taking a pre-tax-season tropical vacation before Frank's job as an accountant got into the full tax-time swing. The couple traveled to the Caribbean Island of Providenciales, in the Turks and Caicos Islands, to enjoy the clear ocean water, the relaxed local attitude and the refreshing island sun, but they came home from their winter getaway with more than just a suntan. The Pileggis adopted a three-month old puppy, which they brought back to Montgomery County at the end of their trip.

Although the Pileggis were going on vacation to relax before tax season, they were also traveling to bring a care package for Potcake Place, a nonprofit organization that sets up the adoption of local island dogs. During their vacation they had the opportunity to meet some potcakes puppies, and could not help but invite one of the gentle Caribbean dogs into the lives.
"They bring the puppies to your resort," Misty said. "They give you an opportunity to meet them and inevitably fall in love with them."
Potcakes, which are a recognized breed on the Turks and Caicos Islands, are so named because for generations the islanders fed them the caked remains at the bottom of their cooking pots, Misty said.
Misty had done research on Potcake Place, and the plight of the potcakes before the trip was even planed, and when the opportunity to help the dogs arose, she packed leashes, dog toys and treats into her suitcase along with her bathing suit and suntan lotion.
"They are the only guardian angels for the potcakes," Pileggi said about why she wanted to support Potcake Place.
The Pileggis were excited to help out the potcakes, and were even considering couriering one of the easy going dogs back to the United States for an adoption agency, but they did not think that they were ready to bring another pet into their own home, Misty Pileggi said.
In the spring of 2006 the Pileggis lost their 14-year-old American Alaskan Eskimo, Jessica, and their 14-year-old cat, KC, and did not think that it was the right time to get a new pet, Misty said.
The Pileggis had no intension of adopting, but Potcake Place organized a potcake-puppie beach play date at the beginning of their vacation, and after a week of discussion, they decided to adopt one of the playful little pups.
Gracie, the newest member of the Pilleggi family, made the trip back to the United States with another puppy who was being taken to The New Jersey Animal Alliance for adoption.
One would think that taking two dogs into the country would be difficult, but Misty said that Potcake Place made the process very easy.
"It's extremely easy," Pileggi said. "It was really a piece of cake." (No pun intended)
Gracie has been living with the Pileggis for a few months. She will graduate from puppy kindergarten at Opportunity Barks in Quakertown later this week, and although potcakes like Gracie have had rough early lives, Misty says that Gracie is very well behaved, and brings an island calmness to their home.
"She is very mature for her age," Misty said. "She's very calm and serene. She is definitely on island time."
Since its start just under two years ago, Potcake Place has been able to set up 345 adoptions - 19 of which were to homes in Pennsylvania. Misty said she will continue to do everything that she can to help the organization, and encourages others to get involved with helping the potcakes.
"The more we can spread the word about the plight of the potcake pups and the tireless effort to save them, the greater the number of success stories we can achieve and ultimately help more of these special pups find their forever home," she said.
More information about the potcake pups can be found on the Potcake Place Web site www.potcakeplace.com.

Maintaining Sociability

tips to maintain cool and confidence
dog looking

When is the last time your dog was able to greet a friendly dog on leash? When is the last time your dog played off leash with new/strange dogs?

Perhaps your pooch plays just fine with the dogs in your own home or near by, good enough, right? Well, sociability refers to how your dog will react when he or she meets and greets new or strange dogs. And maintaining sociability with other dogs can be tricky, especially if your interactions with dogs are far and few between. Whatever the case, her are some tips to maintain your dogs sociability and ways to identify things that may be problematic before they become chronic.

Step 1: There's a dog, now what?

Whether you're dog is on leash or not, if you see a dog approaching, praise and reward your dog for looking at the dog and remaining quiet. If your dog has a habit of running the fence line and barking- don't let them. Leash 'em up or call them back to you to prevent this. If they bark a few times then happily sniff through the fence without further drama, then no biggie!

URGENT: Volunteer needed to Philadelphia and Boston

Are you travelling from Provo to an airport in the States or Canada- perhaps after a vacation here, or to get off-island for a time. Please volunteer to carry a pup with you to their new home. Just let us know the date and destination- the more options we have for the new owners, the more likely they will be able to adopt.

Provo to ALL AIRPORTS IN THE US and CANADA- please contact us with any date and destination.

Now looking for PHILADELPHIA, BOSTON, LOS ANGELES AND MIAMI (or any other East Coast Florida Airports)

Always need all major US and Canada airports- please get in touch with date and destination.

Please help change the life of a pup and family, and free up space to save another pup from starvation. Please help if you can. We need YOU to volunteer.

We can meet beforehand, or just at Provo airport at the time of travel. We arrange all paperwork, check-in and pay the 80 USD fee for the pup.

The volunteer simply has to accompany the pup on to the plane, and place the sherpa bag under the seat in front, and then show the health certificate to customs at the destination airport and hand the pup over to the new owner who will meet them there. We keep in constant contact with the new owner to ensure that the liason goes smoothly.

Taking an extra carry-on bag on a journey you will already be taking, can mean the world to a young pup and a family awaiting their new addition. It will also allow us to save more pups lives as we free up space in foster homes.

WE NEED VOLUNTEERS URGENTLY

PLEASE HELP

TripAdvisor Nov 2006: "Just wanted to let everyone know how easy it is to courier a potcake to the US. It actually made leaving a little easier for my 3 kids! They were quite excited to be rescuing a dog from their new favorite island. We were met at the airport in Provo by the Potcake Place founders, given all of the pup's paperwork, Sherpa bag, etc. Abby, the pup, was given a sedative, and we walked through security together no problem. She was a big hit in the gate waiting area and the kids loved her to pieces. She got sleepy after about 20 minutes and settled into her carrier. Getting through customs and immigration in Charlotte where we had a layover took one extra step. Then we had to take her out of the carrier to have her walk through security. Put her back in the bag and not another peep until we arrived in Boston where her new owners were anxiously awaiting her arrival. It was about an 8 hour trip from airport to airport and she did just fine. I strongly encourage everyone to consider giving a Potcake a second chance even if you can't adopt, you can still help by bringing one home to another loving family!"

Mar 2007: "It was such a pleasure to be a part of the wonderful work you are doing for these beautiful pups. We were thrilled to carry Olive to her new Mom (though hard to give her up.) She was the most beautifully tempered dog I've ever met and she stole the hearts of not just us but so many people in the airports-the security guards, airline hostesses, custom officials, fellow passengers and even the pilot. It was a real joy for us to be able to help, in our small way, in securing a loving home for Olive/Dakota. Transporting a pup to Miami was no problem at all and we will do it again when we return to the Turks."

Sept 2007: "Mahler was an absolute joy to transport. He was a star everywhere he went, and we answered lots of inquiries as to 'what is a Potcake?' Little Mahler touched a few hearts, and ours are definitely included. You would have never known that he was a first-time flier, as he never made a sound or even soiled his bag liner! He patiently waitied for our destinations to do his thing on a pad we laid out for him, and we never had to give him a sedative. Many people made comments that he was much better behaved than the children on the plane, haha. Thank you again to the Potcake Place for what you do, and letting us assist in this little guy's adoption. You couldn't have made it any easier for us to do, and whenever we make it back to Turks and Caicos, we will make sure to do it again! To anyone else who may be considering volunteering as a courier: You won't regret it!"

Millie aka Lee Home

"Hi all you potcakers....update on the life of Millie...after her first encounter with snow "huh?  whats this white cold cold stuff", she now LOVES IT, prancing through it - diving in assuming she will find a treasure (she is a burrower) - looking incredulous when she comes up empty-pawed..Too funny. We all take great delight in her one ear tricks. If you look at her sternly, she will tilt her head and take her left ear and stick it straight out sideways and its hard to be stern! We love love her - she loves us. Thank you so much again."

Handsome Hopkins

"Little Potcake Hopkins is doing really well.  Everybody wants to know what kind of dog he is because he is just so handsome  He loves all dogs and all people and says hi to everyone with big wags of his tail.  He is potty trained already, he knows how to 'sit' and he loves getting his picture taken.  Don't let the serious little face in the pictures fool you.  He's a little bundle of energy and a total loveable goofball. Love to all his little potcake cousins."

Frequent Flyers

"Our Road Warriors made it safely home to Quebec. What a trip- they were so quiet, no sounds, no crying, just flying home like frequent flyers. Georges and Ginger made a major hit with USA immigration and Homeland Security. Upon arrival in Montreal, Canadian Officer thought they were so nice that he even got out of his security desk to cuddle them and play with them while thousands of visitors were waiting in line to be granted permission to enter Canada!!"

Shake a Paw Utley

"Utley is doing fantastic!  He had his second vet appointment last week.  He weighs 20 pounds now.  He is a delight to have in our household.  He is crate trained and housebroken, he knows to come when he is called, he knows sit, stay and how to give his paw on command.  He is a smart cookie!  He and Barrett are two peas in a pod and enjoy each other's company very much. We are spreading the word to all of our family and friends about the potcakes."

Takes to the skies

"Jimmy is fantastic.  He is loving and cuddly.  He is totally house broken, knows when it is time for supper and knows several new things.  He goes for a ride in the car almost every day.  We are going to take him in our small airplane as soon as we get a doggy headset for him.  He is spoiled, he is loved and he is my baby!"

Blue Eyes

"Dupree still has his beautiful blue eyes! He has completely adjusted to his new life in Arizona. He has learned how to shake his paw. Dupree continues to be a ball of endless energy. Princess is a 13 year old Lab and Dupree has brought out the puppy in her.

My grandmother passed away this month and somehow Dupree would recognize exactly when he needed to show some extra love to his family. Just yesterday he was on my lap and I just held him and he didn’t move until I was ready to let him go…he didn’t bite, wiggle or anything…and when I stopped hugging him, no joke he started licking the tears off my face. Puppy breath and all. I was touched. We love him very much and are very thankful for such a puppy."

Dewey at Home

"Dewey is everything I was hoping for as a new member of our family! Many thanks to everyone in your organization for your outstanding commitment to potcakes.  Everything went without a hitch because you had every detail for a successful adoption taken care of from the "wee-wee" pads in the bag to the health certificate.  Also, a great big hug for the foster mom who socialized Dewey.  She is very well behaved, loving and indeed mischievous.   The family, including big brother Dooley and the cats, have fallen in love with her already.  She fits in like she's been a member of the family forever."

Pepper to Atlanta

"Pepper (who we have named Caicos) did WONDERFULLY on the plane ride - and the car ride home from the airport!  We have been taking Caicos around the neighborhood for walks in the morning and evening.  She walks so well and we have both started jogging a bit - I think she is better at that than I am! I know she enjoys our yard and chasing the little frogs that live near our house.  She is getting very well at obeying commands like sit and stay and lie down.  She is definitely very smart.  OK, I will quit gushing now.  Thank you and the entire foundation so much for this opportunity to adopt such a wonderful little girl.  We are forever indebted."

Grand New York

"We made it home just fine yesterday, only about 3 barks in the plane if you can believe that.  So Grand, we are now calling Provo-- but pronouncing it to sound like Bravo. He is keeping us on our toes.  Barnum is quite abit jealous, he has let a few low growls at Provo but we had a break through Barnum wanted to play with him for about a second tonight in the park. He is already spoiled rotten and gets the run of the place. He is walked every 2-3 hours!  I will keep passing the good word on.  I promise I will keep you updated on "Provo" and give him lots of kisses for you.  Thank you again, we feel truly blessed with him."

New Hampshire Potcake

"My family adopted Willy (was Wendal) a few weeks ago. We just adore this pup! He is the sweetest boy. Loves to cuddle. Each morning when I first take him out to do his business I pick him up to bring him back in for his breakfast and he just nuzzles right into my neck. He's just the cutest - Thanks so much to Potcake Place for bringing us our new love!"

It is Fate

"Fate is doing great. We got home late last night and Fate was groggy and worn out, but was happy to be on solid ground! I spent a few hours cuddling and playing before bed. He slept all night without any problem and has just had breakfast. He has not yet had an accident in the house and is doing great going outside to do his buisness. He is such a sweetheart and really knows his name, so we decided to keep it just that way! He is a very smart pup! I cannot thank you enough for being true angels and doing what you do! Thank you, Thank you, Thank you!!!"

New Home

"Finley started off a bit groggy from all of the travel, but after a few mintes with solid earth under his feet he started showing his true adorable self. He has already downed his first meal and a fair bit of water, with the kids commenting on each mouthful. Currently he is wandering the house and yard taking in a whole new world. He is everything we expected and more!"

"As owners of three potcakes, we enjoy every moment of every day with them, and would not trade them for the world. They are the most loving, intelligent and protective, without being aggressive, dogs we have ever owned.

It is our intention to forward your web site to all our contacts, as we feel the faster and wider the news spreads, the more succesful you will be in finding homes for these wonderful dogs."
